In the autumn half-term holiday, we bring one of the absolute top talents from the circus world to Destelheide. Alexander Vantournhout will give a three-day masterclass in which he will try to close the gap between dance, motion and acrobatics. A unique opportunity for advanced amateur dancers, physical performers and circus artists to immerse themselves into contact improvisation and other techniques!
This masterclass will focus on improvisation, stretching, safe falling techniques, spirals and physical duets with other participants. Expect a playful but very physical course in which elements from both dance, yoga and circus will be applied. Alexander is assisted by Ben McEwen, a dancer who also studied at P.A.R.T.S. and will give ‘barefoot running’ sessions, running on bare feet in Destelheide’s nature. Ruben Mardulier (ground acrobat) will assist during the lessons ‘partnering’ and ‘ground acrobatics’.
Alexander Vantournhout: "With the exercises of this masterclass I want to work on principles of motion, which participants can then use freely in their performances, rather than teaching them particular forms. For this, I can draw on my own performances, on exercises from other choreographers such as Steve Paxton and on my general background in circus and acrobatics. It will be an energetic course in which we will approach motion and (contact) improvisation from a new angle!"
Who is Alexander Vantournhout?
Alexander Vantournhout studied ‘cyr wheel’ at ESAC (Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque, Brussel) and contemporary dance at P.A.R.T.S., the dance academy of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker in Brussels. He was artist in residence at Destelheide with his performance ‘Caprices’ and received very positive reviews for the way in which he combined traditional circus techniques with dance. With his next performance ‘ANECKXANDER’, which he created together with Bauke Lievens, he won first prize at ‘Circus Next’ and ‘Theater aan Zee’, after which he went on a long international tour. To top it all, he was recently selected for ‘Het Theaterfestival’ (book your tickets for the performances at deSingel).
At this moment, he is working on new creations that will premiere in the coming years. Together with Koen Allary of Circuscentrum, he is writing a book on circus. Alexander also works as coach for other artists. As a teacher, he teaches regularly in Danscentrum Jette and in the circus schools ACAPA in Tilburg and ESAC in Brussels, but he has also given plenty of workshops at DOCH (Stockholm), Codarts (Rotterdam), Travno Center (Zagreb), Vertigo (Turin) and Circuscentrum (Gent).
